Duration: 15 minutes 30 seconds
Darkness: sky and water. As the sun rises, all becomes light: the air and the water merging.Gradually the light dims. Darkness. And all begins again.

Eternity.
It is the sea
Mixed with the sun.

The Clootie Tree~Installation
Via- Camden Street Exhibition 2002

The Clootie Tree.

The Clootie Tree: Installation detail

The custom of hanging 'clooties' (rags) on trees or bushes by a sacred well was once widespread throughout Scotland, Wales and Ireland. It is also common in the Middle East.  The Camden Street area, where this exhibition was held, is one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Dublin.

The image of the rag tree and the votive offerings appealed to me as an ancient Irish tradition and a symbol of ethnic diversity, which expresses the cultural identity of the area- a symbol
of both the past and the present.
